Voice & Tone Tuning

Bonus Five tone lines · the voice-match trick · phrases to ban Read once, reuse forever

When Claude's default voice is a little… much.

Out of the box, Claude writes like a really polite, really thorough assistant with zero context about your life. Perfect grammar. Lots of bullets. Occasional phrases like "certainly!" and "I hope this helps!" It's not wrong. It's just not you.

For a work email, that polished voice is fine. For a text to your sister or a school pickup note, it's too stiff. The good news: Claude's voice is completely adjustable, and it takes one sentence.

What's on this page

A set of paste-able tone lines you can drop into any prompt to instantly change how Claude sounds. The trick that makes drafts sound like you specifically. A list of phrases to ban that scream "AI wrote this." And the one-time setup that pins all of this into your Family Manager so you never have to repeat it.

Five tone lines to keep in your back pocket.

Drop any of these into a prompt or as a follow-up.

1 · Warm friend tone
Talk to me like a friend who's done this before. Warm, direct, no bullet points, no disclaimers, no "I hope this helps." Just say the thing.
2 · Tired-mom tone (for your replies)
Write like a busy mom texting while loading the dishwasher. Short sentences. No corporate phrases. Occasionally imperfect — it should sound human, not polished.
3 · No-fluff tone
Skip the intro and the summary. No "great question" and no recap at the end. Just answer.
4 · Kind-but-firm tone (for boundaries)
Write it kind but firm. No guilt, no over-explaining, no apologizing. Warm tone, clear boundary.
5 · Plain-language tone (for explaining things)
Explain it like you're talking to a smart friend who's never heard of this before. No jargon, short sentences, one idea at a time.

The trick that makes drafts sound like you.

Tone lines get you most of the way. For the rest — where it sounds like your voice specifically — paste in a sample and ask Claude to match it.

The voice-match prompt
Here's a text I sent recently that sounds exactly like me: [paste 2–3 sentences you actually wrote — a real text, email, or note]. For anything you draft for me in this conversation, match that voice. Same rhythm, same vocabulary, same level of polish — or lack of it.

Why this works.

Claude is very good at pattern-matching. A few real sentences of yours give it more voice information than a page of instructions ever could. Your "I don't use exclamation points and I always start texts with 'hey'" — it'll pick that up automatically.

Pro move: once you find a voice sample that works, save it. You'll reuse it every time you want Claude to draft something as you.

Phrases to ban.

Claude has a few verbal tics that scream "this was AI." You can turn them off permanently for the conversation with one line.

Paste this into any chat where you're drafting replies
A few banned phrases for anything you draft for me, ever: "I hope this email finds you well," "please don't hesitate to reach out," "circling back," "touching base," "just checking in," "wanted to flag," "at your earliest convenience." Use plain English instead.

Add your own bans.

Got a phrase your kids make fun of you for? A line you'd never actually say? Add it to the list. It's your voice — you get to define what doesn't sound like you.

Make it stick — save your tone once.

In a regular chat, you'd have to paste these tone lines every time. In a Claude Project (Phase 2) you set them once and every chat inside the Project inherits them automatically.

The one-time setup that pays off forever

  • Open your Family Manager → Custom instructions (set up in the custom-instructions lesson).
  • Find the VOICE section. Paste in your favorite tone line from above. Drop in your voice sample. List your banned phrases.
  • Save. Every chat inside Family Manager now drafts in your voice by default.
  • Repeat the same paste in any other Project where Claude drafts on your behalf — Kid Life, Home Operations, Money Command Center, plus Inbox Command Center if you took the Inbox Power Users bonus.
